Riva 1920: A Journey Through Timeless Craftsmanship

Riva 1920, an Italian furniture company, is renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship and commitment to sustainability. This article explores the unique materials and designs that define Riva 1920’s legacy in the furniture world.

The Kauri Legacy: Nature’s Time Capsule

The word “Kauri,” derived from the Māori language, refers to a species of coniferous tree found in the subtropical climate of New Zealand. These trees, dating back to the Jurassic period (approximately 190-135 million years ago), are among the largest in the world in terms of trunk volume, reaching heights of up to 70 meters and widths of up to 9 meters. Despite their grandeur, many forests were unfortunately felled during British colonization. Today, the remaining Kauri trees are protected by the government and laws.

An iconic representation of this wood is the Auckland dining table, reminiscent of the unique craftsmanship seen in redwood furniture. The combination of Kauri wood and resin (artificial) creates a distinctive look. When light passes through the table surface, it casts a delicate and ethereal shadow, enhancing the sense of lightness. The uniqueness of these tables, showcased at the Shanghai Milan Exhibition with a pre-discount price of 800,000 RMB, is a testament to their exclusive nature.

Around 50,000 years ago, a series of catastrophic events during the last Ice Age submerged vast forests under water and mud. The unique properties of the mud and the lack of oxygen preserved these trees, preventing decomposition and petrification. Despite being buried for thousands of years, the wood remains in pristine condition, equal in quality to freshly cut timber, and enriched with a small amount of resin amber.

RIVA has signed a procurement agreement with the New Zealand government, as this natural wood is limited in quantity. Harvesting is scheduled annually, making Kauri wood a product of patience and anticipation, with sizes often varying based on each harvest.

Briccole: The Venice Connection

The term “Briccole,” unique to the Italian language, refers to the solid wood piles used in Venice, currently exclusive to Riva 1920. These oak piles, placed at the bottom of the sea, guide boats by marking waterways and tides in Venice. On average, these piles last 10 to 20 years before needing replacement due to tidal erosion. Their main characteristic, as a natural habitat for marine flora and fauna, leaves unique marks on the wood, making each piece one-of-a-kind.

The Rialto 6, a popular cabinet from Riva 1920 with 5-6 drawers, is an example of this unique style. Its bold design appeals to many but may be overwhelming for those with a fear of dense patterns.

Cedar: A Touch of the Mediterranean

Riva’s cedar originates from Lebanon. Thousands of years ago, these expansive forests covered the mountain slopes of the Near East, but today only a few hundred remain. Since the late 18th century, cedar has been planted in parks and gardens across Italy and other parts of Europe.

New additions to the Riva 1920 collection include the Geppo pet, a 2019 favorite among cat lovers, and the Molletta, a bench resembling a giant clothespin. The Mondana, exceeding expectations, is actually a wooden stool. Riva also explores playful designs with wooden bananas, chickens, tires, and mushrooms.

Cedar, often finished with a dark stain, showcases Riva’s continuous expansion of imagination. The light color and prominent grain of cedar make it visually appealing, allowing for diverse and dynamic designs.

Embracing Natural Imperfections

Unlike other manufacturers like GIORGETTI, who may remove knots in the wood, RIVA preserves these natural elements, reflecting a different brand philosophy. This approach is not about superiority but about embracing and showcasing the authentic character of the wood.

Apart from these three rare wood types sourced globally, Riva 1920’s selection is vast and diverse. Some woods are incredibly hard, setting a high standard in craftsmanship.

Italian brands specializing in wood are few, but creating a distinctive identity is always a crucial consideration. Riva 1920 has carved its unique path with globally sourced materials and an unwavering commitment to environmental conservation, setting it apart from its peers.
