In today’s tech-driven landscape, AI tools, such as ChatGPT and Bard, have carved a significant place in daily business operations. But as with any technological leap, they bring a bouquet of ethical questions to the forefront.

The quintessential question that arises is – when AI-driven errors occur, who should bear the brunt? According to a July 2023 Tech.co study, the business world remains divided on this matter.

Nearly one-third (31.9%) are firm in their belief that the employee utilizing the AI tool should be held accountable for any missteps. They argue that AI, after all, is just another tool in the vast arsenal available to modern workers. If a carpenter’s tool malfunctions, is it not the carpenter’s duty to ensure its appropriate use?

However, slightly more leaders (33.3%) lean towards shared accountability. In their view, responsibility doesn’t fall on the employee alone. The manager, who presumably approves and oversees the use of such tools, should also share in the blame. After all, managerial roles involve overseeing operations and ensuring the effective and safe utilization of resources, including AI.

Then, there are the 26.1% of respondents who advocate for a tri-fold responsibility model. To them, the AI tool, the user, and the overseeing manager all play a role and, therefore, should collectively shoulder the blame. This perspective interestingly merges the technological aspect, emphasizing that software tools should be reliable, with the human factor, which assumes responsibility in operation and oversight.

The ethical maze doesn’t end with accountability. AI’s role in corporate communication is another heated debate topic. An overwhelming 82.4% of business leaders see no harm in leveraging tools like ChatGPT to draft messages to colleagues. The promise of efficiency and quick turnaround might be factors influencing this stance.

Yet, a minority (8.8%) stands firmly against such practices. In their view, business communications, especially personal or heartfelt ones, should preserve the human touch. An AI-generated message might lack the nuance or empathy of a human-crafted one.

Tied into this is the debate about transparency. Should one disclose the use of AI in crafting messages? A notable 80.8% advocate for this transparency, emphasizing trust in business relationships. Conversely, 19.2% feel it’s unnecessary, perhaps believing that the message’s content is more important than its origin.

Unauthorized Use of AI: Crossing the Line?

The final facet of this ethical exploration revolves around permission. Is it appropriate for employees to use AI tools without prior approval? A significant 68.5% of business leaders think not. They argue that tools, especially those that can impact business outcomes or involve sensitive data, should be used judiciously and with oversight. On the flip side, 12.3% believe in a more liberal approach, giving employees the freedom to harness AI without explicit permission. Yet, a thoughtful 19.2% feel the context is vital, with factors like data sensitivity, task nature, and existing company policies playing a pivotal role.
